East Men and Women are triumphant

Series stays alive
A 500 strong Tauranga crowd watched a much improved West men's team draw 5-5 with their East competitors. After losing 4-1 in the first match of the series last week West captain Tony Hopping was pleased with his teams performance. Citing the teams ability to "stick with the defensive structure" the key to the teams improved performance.
Meanwhile the East women reversed their 8-3 loss last week to a 5-0 win over the West team last night. This means that the East and West women are equal on goals for and against going into the last game in Hamilton this Friday 3 July.
The East men hold a plus three goal adavantage, which means the West men will have to perform very well to close this deficit and challenge for the Bayleys Midlands East vs. West Cup for 2009.
The final match of the series will be held in Hamilton this Friday night July 3

Stephenson leads East to 4-1 win

Match One of the Bayleys East vs. West Series was a great success. 250 people braved the cool Ngatea night to watch top level hockey, which boasted several Black Sticks and National Hockey League players.
Ngatea resident and recently retired Black Stick, Lloyd Stephenson, captained his East team to an impressive 4-1 win over the West team.
In the Women's match, Kate Mahon predictably played a starring role in her West teams 8-3 win over the East team.
All four teams head to Tauranga this Friday night (26 June) to play the second match of the three match series.

East v West series
The best club players from throughout the Midlands region will be vying for a spot in the East or West hockey teams
During June and July East meets West in what will be a competitive match-up between Midlands finest players vying for a spot in the 2009 Bayleys Midlands National Hockey League teams. A best of three series played between Bayleys East and Bayleys West will provide the Bayleys NHL coaches with ample opportunity to select their Bayleys Midlands teams for 2009. This series has evolved from the state of origin series introduced last year. Eligibility of players depends on their association of origin. A player with origins from Counties/Manukau or Waikato associations will be eligible for selection in the West team. Players from Bay of Plenty, Tauranga and Thames Valley associations will be eligible for the East team.
East's Gemma Flynn (Olympian, Black Stick and Bayleys Midlands player) and West's Kate Mahon (Black Stick and Bayleys Midlands player) are expected to be dominant figures playing against each other in the Bayleys East v West series.
Bayleys East v West Match Schedule:
from 5.45pm
June 19th - Ngatea - Match 1
June 26th - Tauranga - Match 2
July 3rd - Hamilton - Match 3

Midlands U21 teams end their 2009 campaign
The Midlands U21 teams finished the National tournament in 4th and 5th places. Going into the final round match against Canterbury the Midlands U21 Men's team needed a win by eight goals to secure a spot in the top four. After racing to a four-nil lead the Midlands boys grew tired and could not maintain this form eventually winning four-two. This meant they finished 4th-equal on points but dropped to 5th on goal count back. As a result they played Southern in the 5th/6th classification match. A game that finished in a nil-all draw, placing the Men 5th equal overall.
After a convincing three-one win over Central on Friday the Midlands U21 Women's team needed Auckland to lose to Southern later that night to secure a place in the final. Auckland, playing for a place in the final managed to beat Southern with ease. This forced a rematch between Canterbury and Midlands for the 3rd/4th classification match. Earlier in the tournament Midlands had beaten Canterbury four-two but could not repeat this form as they lost to Canterbury and eventually finished the tournament in 4th place.

Hi all,
The completion of the regional coaching clinics overall was a huge success. The move away from the 2 day camp into a 3 day live in camp challenged our players to live and breath hockey for 3 full days. Please find below some thoughts about the camps.

Midlands U18 Regional Coaching Clinic
Sunday 20 April - Tuesday 22 April
Players: 20 female 18 male
This group of players has some talented players although I would also say that the under 18 age group is looking forward to the crop of under 16 who will come through in 2009. They went about their work well although the ability of some players to apply themselves over the full day and particularly into the final day was interesting. The senior players in this group showed a lack of application which therefore effected the sessions.
Overall the group did train well.
There are some glaring weaknesses. These being:
Distribution skills especially hitting. The style tended to be too upright, loose swings and poor contact on the ball
Poor reverse stick skills particularly hitting and receiving. This limited goal scoring
Inability to link with other players and set up very simple 2v1 opportunities
Ball focused and therefore lack vision
Neglect to scan either prior or when receiving the ball effecting vision
Show too much of the ball when dribbling meaning huge numbers of 1v1 battles and turnover. This is highlighted by back 4 defenders and central midfielders opting to take players on. Often through a lack of vision.
Mobility and flow in receiving the ball
Intensity in their play is low
Static and impatient tackling
ALL THESE WEAKNESSES FLOWED INTO THE UNDER 21 PROGRAMS RECENTLY COMPLETED
Midlands U16 Regional Coaching Clinic
Wednesday 23 April - Friday 25 April
Players: 56 female 58 male
This group of players has some excellent players there is some cream across all 5 of the associations of the region. It is to be noted that a Midlands under 16 team would be very very good. Tauranga, BOP and Waikato all have players who would compete for a TigerTurf spot. Thames Valley have a couple of talented players who show potential. The Counties players who are in the top bracket are already on the move to Auckland which is a worrying trend.
They went about their work well especially because the senior players love hockey and are great trainers. They are all well versed at live in camps and thrive in the environment.
115 players was too many and we will rectify this in the future. However because of the quality of staff and motivation of the players this camp was the easiest to enjoy.
We did have some damage to the hostel over the camp. This was disappointing but we have repaired this at Midlands expense and will move forward. We will put some tighter procedures to ensure this does not happen again.
Overall the group did train well.

Midlands U13 Regional Coaching Clinic
Sunday 27 April - Tuesday 29
Players: 33 female 37 male
This group of players has some talented players. I would say there is room for improvement across the region. If we could run this clinic again I would look to have more planned events in the evenings to entertain the children. They have too much energy and are prepared to use it off the pitch rather than on it. We need to accommodate this in our program. This is not the case for 16s and 18s.
Overall the group did train well.
There are some glaring weaknesses. These being:
Distribution skills especially hitting. The style tended to be too upright, loose swings and poor contact on the ball
Poor reverse stick skills particularly hitting and receiving
Very poor ability to recognize and set up very simple 2v1 opportunities
Ball focused and therefore lack vision. All players lead for the ball
Neglect to scan either prior or when receiving the ball effecting vision
Very static tacklers
Mobility and flow in receiving the ball
Intensity in their play is low
Lack the ability to pass and then re-position to receive the ball back again
Often choose the option of just simply whacking the ball. Even when there is no obvious target they are aiming for. This is especially prevalent in the girls
Reports
Reports have been written and have been distributed to the associations. The associations will then distribute to the players. We will also keep a copy and have formed a spreadsheet to monitor our best players.
Representative coaches should be aware of the reports and what players need to work on. They also should be aware of the weaknesses of the region in terms of development. Although they will have their own thoughts we need to see improvements.
Rankings
I have sent the rankings of the players through to Hockey NZ. We have some very gifted players in the under 16 group I'm positive these players will prove too attractive to overlook for the TigerTurf 2008.
We will also rank the top 15-20 players for each age group in boys and girls to continue monitoring them.
Future
Midlands Hockey has been seeking meetings with each region to set up regional training opportunities. This will basically be our top coaches training our best coaches and players. This is part of the plan toward our high performance throughout Midlands.
The live in camps are very important. The players when they make national squads will be comfortable as it will be the same as our camps. The live in camps over the summer will be advertised shortly and we would also like to run the regional clinics in the same format in 2009 with the improvements highlighted.
I'll be checking the Rotorua Boys Hostel over the next month with the plan to utilise this in the future. With BOP looking to install a second water turf it is certainly an option.
I'll also do some checking in Tauranga.
If you have any questions or issues please email.
Kind regards
Darren
